According to Dirk Kuyt, Southampton’s defender Virgil van Dijk would do a ‘great job’ at Liverpool. Van Dijk’s situation at St Mary’s was one of the sagas of the summer after he failed to land a move in spite of tendering in a transfer request to Southampton.
The Reds were believed to be closing in on a deal at the start of the summer but were forced to end their pursuit after being accused of tapping-up offences.
Jurgen Klopp is expected to revive his interest in Van Dijk this winter, however, and Kuyt believes he would be a welcome addition at Anfield. ‘I know Virgil,’ Kuyt, who spent six years on Merseyside at Liverpool, told Sky Sports. ‘I didn’t play with him in the national team but he’s a great player. He could do a great job at Liverpool but it’s not for me to say if he would be an improvement or not. That’s up to the club.’
