Anil Gurung favorite for Nepal captaincy after Sagar Thapa’s suspension

Nepalese International Forward and Manang Marshyangdi Club’s skipper Anil Gurung is firm favorite to take over the captaincy role following Sagar Thapa’s suspension from football.

Gurung, who was give the rights to vote for the FIFA Ballon D’Or according to reports have boosted his chance to take the all important role. After Sagar Thapa’s arrest over allegations of Match Fixing incident, Nepal has been preparing for SAFF Championship without captain. But as a senior player of the team, Gurung has been taking charge of the team’s drill when required.

Gurung is an experienced captain having skippered Manang in recent years. Gurung was forced to hand over the captaincy when Sagar Thapa played for the club but Gurung retained the armband once Thapa left for Three Star.

Along with Anil, Biraj Maharjan and Rohit Chand are also said to be canididates to get the job. Biraj is the most experienced in the squad with 50 caps to his name while Rohit is one of the best talents the country has and has captained the club side since his young age. Leadership skills along with a team player make Rohit a strong candidate. After Bharat Khawas’ injury which forced him to miss the tournament, there are only a few experienced players in the squad.
