The Diet for the Match

The football players’ aim is to have a surplus of energy for the game. To maximize your performance on the field, you need to have a breakfast full of protein, fat and carbohydrates. You should eat an omelette, wholegrain cereals with fresh milk, fresh fruits and meat.

Salty foods have to be avoided at least for 24 hours prior to the match because they will make you feel dehydrated. Moreover, you cannot eat dense and heavy foods because they need more time to digest.

If you always feel a bit nervous before the game and you cannot eat a proper meal because of it, you will feel even worse on the field because of an empty stomach. This is the reason why it is recommended to eat something like a breakfast rich in fibre. Fibres will make you feel a lot better.

It is also important to be well hydrated, so make sure you drink as much water as possible. You need to stop drinking alcohol and other diuretics such as caffeine loaded drinks at least 24 hours prior to the football match.

Three hours before the game starts, you should have lunch. Have low GI foods which will give you a constant energy release. Half an hour before the game, you select a high GI snack to give you energy fast.

What to Eat After the game

During the game, you will need a lot of energy for a good performance, but you also need to recover from the match, select food products rich in carbohydrates and proteins to help a faster recovery. Eating salty foods is recommended to help you avoid cramping of your muscles because it helps retain water. You will feel dehydrated as well so you should also consume plenty of water.

It is also recommended to include bulk powders such as glucosamine in your diet to maintain healthy joints.
